Trend Talk With Interior Design Expert Mia Parres

Talking 2021 & 2021 Design Trends with Toronto Based Interior Designer and Former HGTV Host of The Expandables and Home To Win.

Written by Jennifer Bartelt

Back in December I caught up with my beautiful, designer friend
Mia Parres to talk about home design trends in 2020 and what she believes is in store for 2021. Mia (alongside Rob Evans) co-hosted a show on HGTV called The Expandables and Home To Win(Canada’s rendition of Extreme Home Makeover).  Mia is a successful interior designer in Toronto (born and raised) and has recently launched her business Mia Parres Homes.
Mia is also the co-creator of a new Toronto based lifestyle brand, ABODE (launching in Spring 2021) focusing on luxury bed linens and lounge wear. You can follow Mia’s journey on Instagram at @miaparresdesign and @lovemyabode and on her website www.miaparresdesign.com.

Now – let’s jump in!

What was the biggest trend in 2020?

Single room designs! I loved how people were focusing on redesigning a single room within their home rather than renovating their entire home all at once. As we are shifting into a new world (and time) due to the pandemic, from a design standpoint I am seeing a focus on creating a functional home office, as a priority, as more and more people are working from home.  Going into 2021 and looking at the larger scale, as more people are staying at home they have been focused on saving their income (for more important expenses) and spending more time on home renovations.

What are you predicting in 2021?

In 2021 we will see an increase in the design industry, it’s time to venture beyond working from your couch or dining room table and focus on creating comfort within your home.  People may also be considering larger scale renovations, kitchens especially, as we are spending more and more time within our homes and want to invest in the rooms where we enjoy spending time in (ie. kitchen, bedroom, home office).  This pandemic has created introspection, we are now placing more value in our homes and this has become more important than ever.

What are you most excited about in terms of design?

I get so jazzed for herringbone floors! I think that this pattern when used in modern design is a nod to the past (I see the design in shows I watch like the Queen’s Gambit on Netflix), and this pattern adds texture to any room.  It brings the wood to life, it truly is such a gorgeous design and makes you feel luxurious!
